The Virology Laboratory conducts research and surveillance projects within PNG on a variety of non-sexually transmitted viral infections. The laboratory is currently the National Influenza Centre for PNG working with the World Health Organization to test samples from patients with suspected influenza. The influenza virus is constantly changing, so there are many different strains circulating globally.
We conduct typing and sub typing of strains circulating within PNG and along its borders. This information is valuable for disease response, and can be used for determining which strains need to be targeted in vaccines.
